Part V

1989 RS Camaro

It has been a few weeks since our last update. We decided to take a break from things for one weekend and the weekend prior to that we didn't accomplish a whole lot with the car. Mostly just sanding, painting, cleaning up, figuring out what to do next and making some choices about hardware were about it. This past weekend we did get quite a bit done on the car, so check out the photos as we make a bit more progress.

As you see above, Phillip decided to order a new fender for the right front. It showed up in just a couple of days and he pulled the old one and installed this new one. Saves us quite a bit of body work as the old had some hits in it that were going to take some work to smooth out. You can also see from this shot that we finally finished the firewall and applied a PPG medium-gray acrylic enamel to it and the surrounding engine compartment. The line-lock unit has also been bolted to the firewall next to the location of the master cylinder.

This shot gives you a better look at the detailing that we are doing as we go along. As mentioned before, there's no reason to have a crappy looking racecar. And having worked as a technical inspector for IHRA in the past, I can tell you that a clean, professional looking car is going to go though the tech line a lot quicker than some ratty piece of junk.

From another angle, you can see that we do not have the idler arm in place or the steering box at this point. We are using a Vega manual steering box and have been told that we might have the wrong length steering arm on it. We already purchased a modified idler arm from Ed Quay Racecars that we thought would take care of the problem, but at this point it looks like we are going to have move the idler arm back another inch to make everything work out correctly. You might also notice the shiny brass item mounted on the firewall just at the lower area of the wheelwell. That's a bulkhead fitting for the battery cable. The ignition board will be mounted on the other side of the firewall in the passenger footwell area, and the battery cable coming from the solenoid mounted on that board will connect to one side of the bulkhead fitting. On the engine side another cable will go directly to the mini-starter. Makes for a nice and clean installation.
