Part VII

1989 RS Camaro

We also started getting the interior painted. It doesn't show up very well in the photos but this is a grey hammerite finish. Looks pretty good in person and definitely gives the car a finished appearance. One of the reasons for just doing this section now, is that it will allow us to move forward on the installation of the fuel cell, fuel system, battery trays, batteries and associated wiring. All of which we plan on doing this week. The only major agravation is where to mount the power cutoff switch. There is a place on the tail light area that would work, but nothing else looks very good. We need to figure it out before we can start running battery cables and wiring up the relay for the fuel pump.

Here we have the aluminium dash trimmed and fitted into place. There will be some stand offs welded to the front firewall with Dzus fasterners actually holding the dash to the car. Nice part is that it will allow us in the future to get it out of the way quickly if any need arises, plus the entire dash weighs maybe a pound. Compared to the stock dash, it's probably a good 35-40 pound weight savings. We coated the inside of the door areas with a zinc paint to stop any future rusting after we decided that leaving in the stock crashbars was probably a good safety idea. This shot also shows the various holes, both large and small that have been filled with sheetmetal or just a bit of mig weld.

One more shot of the roll cage work. Pretty stout looking and should provide a very tight racecar that will perform up to our expectations. And we actually found out it is possible for a big guy like me to wiggle around all of those bars and do the welding!

Sure did look a lot different just a few short weeks ago, didn't it?
