1989 RS Camaro

Project Camaro has been raced rather frequently in the past few months since we called the car completed. We have had a few minor problems to sort out, a broken rocker arm one weekend when the car was running absolutely deadly on the numbers and there have been a couple of small upgrades too. As with any project car, you never really finish it as there is always something that you want to change or some new part you want to try out. We're no different.

The changes that we are going to make involve the hatch area glass being replaced with a lexan copy to rid us of about 70 pounds, Phillip has decided that a shiftlight should be added to aid him in making his shifts the same each round, a new cooling fan will be added to the transmission cooler, some new sparkplug wires, a larger carburetor, finishing the interior door panels and the addition of an airbag in the right rear to staighten out the launch. We are moving up to a new set of Brodix aluminium cylinder heads that will have the same valve and chamber size, but should flow a bit better and of course take about 30-35 pounds off the front of the car. The car is now knocking on the 10.70 door in the heat and high humidity and with the changes we plan, we think we will get it down into the 10.50 area. With some decent air, it might even run a bit quicker, but the 10.50 area was the original goal and once there, we will leave it alone and just do normal maintenance.

We plan on a few extra pages showing some of this work as the response to this project has been very good. We have readers scattered all over the US now and love hearing from them. Some have made some great suggestions about the car's setup and we appreciate that information.

A couple of shots of Phillip's rig at VMP recently.

And here we are at Bristol Dragway during the World Footbrake Challenge event. 325+ cars were at this event. It is a beautiful place to race, very well run and we are certainly looking forward to going back next year. Our luck was not the best only making a couple of rounds during the entire weekend, but the experience was a good one for us. The new motorhome towed just great considering we were running up and down some sizeable hills out there.

Remember to have fun racing whatever you bring to the track. That's the best part about running brackets, anyone can do it.
